In the fall of 2003, the long-awaited construction and expansion of Westminster House South was completed. The mission of the building project was to restore and develop our property located at 2700 Bancroft Way, across the street from the UC Berkeley campus, the front part of which now houses Adagia restaurant.
Westminster House South has an unbeatable location at the corner of Bancroft Way and College Avenue, within walking distance of many restaurants and cafes, in addition to downtown Berkeley and the BART station. The historic Walter Ratcliff structure has been home to generations of students, alumni and faculty. We are excited to welcome the entire campus community into our home each year. The new and improved Westminster House South has beds for 130 residents and features a library, roof deck, underground parking garage, and multi-purpose room to provide hospitality for a variety of groups. Every resident room includes separate furniture for each individual resident (bed, chest of drawers, bookcase, desk, and chair), utilities and Internet as well as a microwave oven and a mini-refrigerator. Each floor has a trash chute, and washers and dryers are available in the basement.
Westminster House North
2311 Le Conte Avenue
Westminster House North, at the intersection of Le Conte, Arch, and Hearst, has its own fascinating history. Designed by famed architect Julia Morgan in 1923, it originally served as a sorority house. After stints as a fraternity house and a co-op, the house was renovated in 1999 as plans were drawn up to convert it into a bed and breakfast. Westminster House purchased the building in 2001 and it once again serves the students of the University of California.
The house now accommodates 45 student residents. Each room is fully furnished, including microwaves and mini-refrigerators. The dining and living rooms both have stone fireplaces and large comfortable seating areas. There is high-speed Internet access within the house, as well as two fully furnished television lounges, a parking lot, bicycle storage, and on-site laundry facilities.
