Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How are rooms assigned?
Students who come with friends wishing to room together are matched as roommates. Otherwise, students complete a Roommate Matching Form that is used to match compatible students. After the preliminary matching is complete, roommates are provided information so that they can communicate and meet. In the event that potential roommates discover that they are not compatible, they can request a different roommate. To provide sufficient time and the greatest opportunity for students to find the perfect roommate, students should apply early. The application process is “first come, first serve” with regards to room selection.

How are roommates matched?
The Roommate Matching Form is completed as part of the application process. These are then compared and sorted by Westminster House staff members. The most closely matched students are notified and encouraged to communicate to determine their level of compatibility. Preferences covered by this form include sleeping habits, cleaning habits and study habits.

What utilities are included in my installment payments?
Water, sewer, power, and Internet are all included in the installment payments. Additional services such as cable television are the responsibility of the resident, though cable is available in the 1st and 3rd floor lounges in Westminster House North, and the Multipurpose Room and 4th floor lounge in Westminster House South.

Am I responsible for paying for the whole room if one of my roommates fails to pay?
No - each Residency Agreement is for an individual student for their own bed and shared living space.

What is the term of the Residency Agreement?
The term of the Residency Agreement is roughly the UC Berkeley academic year (middle of August - middle of May).

Is smoking allowed in the building?
Smoking is not allowed anywhere within 20 feet of the building pursuant to Berkeley City Code.

Can I bring my pet?
No, pets are not permitted inside Westminster House.

Can I bring my car?
Yes. Obtaining a parking space at the house is on a “first come, first served” basis and limited spaces are available to residents for a monthly fee.
